Melissa’s Profile

Melissa serves as Of Counsel in the firm’s Huntsville office. Her practice focuses on commercial litigation and appellate law. She has extensive experience representing financial institutions in individual and class actions alleging violations of Sections 11 and 12 of the Securities Act of 1933, Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and various state securities laws. She also has briefed and argued several appeals before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second and Eleventh Circuits. Before joining Maynard Cooper, Melissa practiced with a major New York law firm for more than 10 years.

Melissa’s Experience

  • Represented group of underwriters of various bonds in individual and class actions alleging violations of state and federal securities laws, and achieved dismissal of several individual actions
  • Represented major investment bank in lawsuit by SEC alleging false and misleading statements in proxy statement
  • Represented individual and corporate defendants in lawsuit alleging breach of contract in sale of important piece of art
  • Represented major investment bank in multi-district litigation arising out of underwriting of securities of bankrupt corporation
  • Represented (pro bono) Florida prisoner appealing dismissal of habeas petition as untimely and argued appeal before United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit
  • Represented (pro bono) Florida residents of state-run home in appeal of denial of motion to intervene in settlement that provided for closing of home and argued appeal before United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit
  • Represented emerging markets investor in arbitration and argued appeal of motion to compel arbitration before United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit
